How do I know if I’m overweight or obese?

Find out your body mass index (BMI). BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. People with a BMI of 25 to 29.9 are considered overweight. People with a BMI of 30 or more are considered obese. You can come in to our Gilbert Office to have your BMI measured.

What are the health effects of being overweight or obese?

Being overweight or obese can increase your risk of:
  • Various forms of cancer
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Arthritis
  • High blood pressure
  • Breathing problems
  • Gallbladder disease

What causes someone to become overweight or obese?

Most american can become overweight or obese by eating more calories than they use. A calorie is a unit of energy in the food you eat. Your body needs this energy to function and to be active. But if you take in more calories (or energy) than your body uses, you will gain weight.

Many of these factors can be involved with someone becoming overweight or obese:
  • Poor eating habits; such as bigger portion sizes
  • Reduced or lack of physical activity
  • Genetics
  • Environment and culture

What is the best way for me to lose weight?

The best way to lose weight is to use more calories than you take in. You can do this by following a healthy eating plan and being more active. Before you start a weight-loss program, talk to your doctor.

A safe weight-loss program includes these habits:
  • Set a goal of slow and steady weight loss — 1 to 2 pounds per week
  • Low-calorie eating plans with a wide range of healthy foods
  • Be more physically active
  • Teach yourself about healthy eating and physical activity
  • Adapt your food to your likes and dislikes and cultural background
  • Helps you keep weight off after you lose it

How can physical activity help?

It’s well known that regular exercise plays a large part in maintaining a healthy weight. It can also help with weight loss, when combined with lower calorie intake. Regular physical activity can also improve your cardio, respiratory and muscular fitness. For older adults, activity can improve mental function.
